This past weekend, I loved leading a Passion + Purpose = World Change workshop at a Just in Time for Foster Youth Career Horizon’s Young Women Program Retreat (photo is from the retreat). What inspires me so much about working with these incredible women is despite their challenges of growing up in foster care and having many challenges, they are committed to having a better life and living their own Passion + Purpose = World Change formula – they are already making a difference in this world.
At the retreat, I realized I never really shared how this became my purpose to help young people have better lives via career training. First it starts with me having my own challenging childhood and from this, seeing my purpose is to help support others rise above their challenges to live the life of their dreams. That is what I share with so many clients and in speaking engagements/workshops – our purpose often comes from us rising above our own challenges and then sharing what we have learned to inspire and help others.
And from there – Children with Wings was born and continues to evolve. In 2006, I worked with a life coach and through a meditation, I saw myself win an award 10 years out. I was shown that this award represented my purpose, which is to help give young people wings to rise above poverty – hence Children with Wings was born. I did this first by being led to help with Just Like My Child Foundation helping kids/families/communities in Uganda.
In 2007, I started Careers with Wings to help others give wings to their careers to uncover and live their passion and purpose.
In 2008, I was on a trip to Peru and went to visit an orphanage with the intention to always help kids living in poverty whether at home in San Diego or while traveling. I was led to an orphanage in Cusco where I learned it was a facility that helped kids who had lost their parents to drugs, alcohol, jail or other and they were provided with a home environment and CAREER TRAINING. That is when the dots connected and Careers with Wings and Children with Wings merged – I realized this is how I would help give young people wings to rise above poverty – I would do this via career training.
In 2010, I stepped into this vision by helping Just in Time for Foster Youth build Career Horizons for Young Women and I still teach classes and mentor young women from this program. For a San Diego Union Tribune article on this story – please click here.
In 2014, I became a member of the Community Alliance for Youth Success (CAYS) with Stedman Graham, Bobbi De Porter of Quantum Learning Network and other youth education/empowerment thought leaders. CAYS launched Youth Success Week in January 2016 with the Oceanside Unified School District in San Diego to serve as a nationwide model that is pulling together community resources and leaders to ensure youth success. We are having another Youth Success Week January 30-February 4, 2017.
The Children with Wings journey and my mission to help youth live their passion and purpose continues. If you want to collaborate in this area – please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org and please visit my website www.careerswithwings.com.
