I am always on the lookout for great people doing great things to make this world a better place. I was fortunate to meet Sashi Whitman recently at a women’s conference and hear her story about how she creates relevant and authentic connections among women. One way she does this is through her digital magazine Affinite Magazine. I wanted to hear more about what led Sashi on this journey and also wanted to hear about her Passion + Purpose = World Change Formula. Here is what Sashi had to share about her journey:
1) What is your Passion + Purpose = World Change formula
My passion is to create relevant and authentic connections among women. My purpose is to effect change. I want to empower and equip women with specific resources to propel them forward professionally, and personally.
2) How did you uncover your passion and purpose?
I uncovered my purpose many years ago in graduate school, when I was part of a team that provided economic redevelopment projects for a small, economically depressed town of Uvalde, Texas. I knew then that whatever I did, I had to effect change and help others improve their circumstances.
Creating relevant connections came about when I started my digital magazine, Affinite, and was trying to come up with a specific ‘brand’ that captured my mission. I continually visited business networking groups in San Diego, and meet incredible women, and wondered why I had never heard of them or their organizations before. So my goal is to really create strong, authentic relationships among women to help each other—don’t run alone.
3) What steps did you take to live your passion and purpose?
I took baby steps to start my magazine 3 years ago—it then went live in August of 2015. I asked some of the business women I met to be my first authors and content providers. I am still seeking more writers and powerful, authentic women to interview to create content and resources.
4) I talk a lot about putting together the pieces of your passion puzzle to create the life of your dreams? How do you feel that you have done this?
My passion puzzle is to ultimately monetize the magazine and make it a sustainable business entity. I am asking for sponsors who want to get in front of this unique audience—women of faith, primarily in their late 30’s through early 60’s, who are trying to figure out their next steps in life—business, and personal. Most of my audience are moms, and understand the daunting task it is to raise kids with integrity and purpose. At the same time, these women are trying to create a successful marriage, or navigate a separation or divorce, simultaneously finding their true calling and voice. I believe my Passion Puzzle is still in progress, and Affinite Magazine is one of the cornerstones of this puzzle.
5) What advice do you have for others who are looking to uncover and live their passion and purpose?
Talk to others, and constantly tell them your dreams. That is what I did—the more I spoke to other women about my magazine, the more excited I became, and I received so much encouragement and enthusiasm. I knew I was hitting a nerve, and that my dream was specific and attainable.
Get an accountability partner, someone who is safe and who you can really share your life with, and who will check in with you to reach your goals.
Hire a business coach that meets your needs and sets actionable goals for you—I did, and it helped tremendously.
